Top 10 Most Shocking and Scandalous Television Moments of 2006

By Rachel Thomas, About.com

2006 brought us some great television, but it also brought many a shocking and scandalous moment. Find out what we think were the most shocking and scandalous moments in 2006.

1. The WB and UPN Merge into the CW

When the WB and UPN failed to ever capture an audience on par with the big boys, the two networks decided to combine their efforts and create a network that would reach a bigger share of the country.

2. Off to Jail -- Twice: Michelle Rodriguez

After pleading guilty to DUI in Hawaii, Rodriguez was sentenced to serve five days in jail. Because she violated her probation from an offense in Los Angeles, she was ordered by a judge in LA to serve 60 days in jail. Too bad she only served four hours of her sentence.

3. When Life Imitates TV

Perhaps starring on a show about the mob has been a bad influence on the cast of The Sopranos. John Ventimiglia (Artie) and Louis Gross (Perry) were arrested earlier this year. Ventimiglia, on charges of DUI and possession of drugs and Gross for criminal mischief. Robert Iler (AJ) and Vincent Pastore (Sal) were arrested in previous years -- Iler on charges of theft and Pastore for attempted assault. Guys, remember, it's a TV show!

4. The Big Deal Over Big Love

If someone had told me a couple of years ago that America would fall in love with a series about a polygamist family, I would have laughed. Turns out, we are very tolerant of the idea of polygamy and anxiously await season two of this scandalous drama.

5. McDreamy in McFight On Set

It was disturbing to learn that Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington nearly came to blows on the set of Grey's Anatomy, but we were even more alarmed to discover that after T.R. Knight announced he was gay, that the fight had to do with a derogatory remark from Washington concerning Knight's sexuality. America was outraged and many thought Washington should have been fired. Looks like the handsome doc will be keeping his scrubs on for a long time to come.

6. 7th Heaven Renewed, Everwood Cancelled

After touting its much-anticipated 7th Heaven series finale, the CW renewed the drama for an 11th season, thus canceling fan favorite Everwood and in the process, angering millions of fans across the country. The fans never gave up though -- donations were made and they managed to get a Ferris wheel put up within viewing distance from CW president Dawn Ostroff's office.

7. Lost Gets Snubbed at Emmy Time

After coming off yet another amazing season, millions of fans were shocked and angered when Lost failed to score nominations in any of the major categories at Emmy time. Perhaps the Emmy voters were just simply annoyed that there are still many more questions than answers on this mysterious drama.

8. Aaron Spelling Passes Away

After giving us decades and thousands of hours of wonderfully scandalous television, TV Icon Aaron Spelling passed away at the age of 83. How did Tori learn the news? Via text message from a friend. Months later it is revealed that Tori inherited less than $1 million of her father's estimated $500 million fortune.

9. Rescue Me Shocks Fans with Rape Scene

Fans of the show were outraged over a rape scene that took place between Denis Leary's character Tommy and his ex-wife Janet. Many felt that a main character raping another character had pushed the envelope a bit too far. It worked for Luke and Laura on General Hospital.

10. Prison Break Star Involved in Fatal Accident

Prison Break actor Lane Garrison (Tweener) was involved in a fatal car accident that killed a 17-year-old male and injured two 15-year-old girls. Witnesses claim they saw Garrison at a party, downing several shots of Grey Goose Vodka. Garrison could be facing some serious prison time if the police can prove that he was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
